A Peaceful Retreat.

Some homes begin with a floor plan. The Sanctuary House began with a feeling. Our clients came to us with a vision that was wonderfully simple yet incredibly ambitious. They wanted a home that felt calm. A place where they could entertain effortlessly, surround themselves with nature and, at the end of every day, feel like they had escaped the outside world. Not somewhere to live. Somewhere to belong.
The block in Applecross wasn’t expansive. In fact, many would have seen it as a site with limitations. We saw opportunity. Because great homes aren’t defined by the size of the land they’re built on. They’re defined by the quality of the thinking behind them.
From the very first sketch, every decision was guided by one question:How can this home feel larger than its footprint? The answer wasn’t found by adding more rooms. It was found by creating better spaces. Spaces that breathe. Spaces filled with natural light from morning through to evening. Spaces that invite fresh air to move naturally throughout the home. Spaces where architecture, interiors and landscape become so seamlessly connected that it’s difficult to tell where one ends and the next begins.
Landscaping was never considered something to add later. It became part of the architecture itself.
Every window was carefully positioned to frame greenery. Every courtyard was designed to soften the built form. Every view was composed so that nature became an everyday part of living within the home. Rather than looking out at a backyard, the home lives amongst the landscape, creating a sanctuary that becomes more beautiful as it matures.
The floor plan was equally intentional. Designed around the rhythm of family life, the home balances openness with privacy. There are generous spaces to gather, celebrate and entertain, yet quiet places to retreat when life slows down. Parents, children and guests each have their own sense of sanctuary, while the heart of the home naturally draws everyone back together. It’s a home that understands how people actually live. Simple. Natural. Effortless.
What makes The Sanctuary House truly special isn’t one individual room or one architectural feature. It’s how everything works together. The light. The ventilation. The proportions. The landscape. The materials. The flow from one space to another. Nothing feels forced. Nothing competes for attention. Every decision quietly supports the next, creating a home that feels balanced, timeless and deeply connected to its surroundings.

Perhaps that’s the greatest lesson The Sanctuary House offers. Extraordinary homes don’t happen by chance. They happen when clients are willing to dream, when designers listen before they draw, and when builders care just as much about the experience of living in a home as they do about constructing it.
When the right people come together, remarkable things become possible. Not because the block is larger. Not because the budget is bigger. But because every decision is made with purpose. The Sanctuary House stands today as proof that thoughtful design can completely transform the way a site is experienced. What once appeared to be an ordinary suburban block has become a peaceful retreat, filled with light, surrounded by landscape and designed to bring people together. That’s what we love creating. Homes that don’t just look beautiful. Homes that change the way people live.
